Today we Almost finished Call of the Wild and in 5 and 8 we went to the computer lab. Check out the practice tests on google classroom and study quizlet. Test tommorrow.

Today we finished chapter 5 and 6.  The TDQs are online and due Thursday in notebook. Study for Quizlet test on Thursday. Sorry for the amount of reading, but I'm trying to squeeze this book in and missing Friday set us back a bit. Feel free to read online or use Overdrive or Libravox to read and get caught up.

Today we had a planner quiz, a Jack London Quiz and read Call of the Wild. We got up to the word Perrault in most classes, a bit further in 4th.  have 5 QPECs for tomorrow. If you missed a quiz today do it in silent reading tomorrow. We also watched a video on the Klondike Gold Rush and learned some new quizlet terms.

Today we looked at TDQs from “Skin” and looked at ee cummings’ poem “One” (it really has no title. Our job was to come up with a thesis statement that will set up an expository essay. The real trick is to not simple give out a bunch of information.

Also have a look at the Yale Open Enrollment program. If nothing else, it’s a great peek into what a college classroom is like.

Today we worked on the Benchmarks. I know these are stressful but they're an important part of what we do here at OUSD and throughout the state and country. I linked the 3rd book plug if you want to start early on that. Read at least 25 minutes per day and have a nice break.

Today we went over the TDQs and talked about The Banksy Dilemma which is what happens when you have valuable art that would be devalued if sold (this has happened a few times). We also read "Skin" by Roald Dahl and watched what happened to our protagonist when confronted with a similar dilemma.

Today we talked about Coordinating conjunctions, saw a brainpop, took some notes, did some NoRedInk and annotated Lamb to the Slaughter.

Annotations and NRI is due tomorrow.

We talked a little about Led Zeppelin songs, and it's truly heartbreaking that so many of you only know "Stairway to Heaven" and "The Immigrant Song." Please spotify Led Zeppelin IV or Houses of the Holy. Or the live version of "Dazed and Confused." Or get the box set.

Today we worked on our Storyboards for LotF. Here are a few pointers:

 

Save. You have to save these (not like google docs, you have to press save. Also, save them under the assignment "Scene from Lord of the Flies"

 

Change the hair and skin colors.

 

If you are working with a partner, decide who does what. Make your own slides. Then you can have one person share or save their picture, send it to the other person, and the other person can add it to their project. 

 

Do not be silly. If you have these guys wearing silly clothes (like space suits or football gear), reduce a significant amount of points.

 

Copy and paste slides. That way you don't have to redraw everything.


We'll finish these up tomorrow.

Today we read most of chapter 8, which is a huge turning point in the story as the division between Ralph and Jack becomes physical and we actually see the Lord of the Flies and, somehow, it communicates with Simon. Sorry for the late post. Today was a fun day; we did our first QPEC student led discussion. Good job Miki, Wiki, and Sarah. We also started our TDQs for Chapter 7 and tomorrow we'll read chapter 8 and all heck breaks loose in LotF. We'll even learn what the title means and get to what is essentially the turning point (not the climax) of the book. It will be fun we'll also quizlet a bit to review.

Today we finished Chapter 6 and talked about Castle Rock, Jack's obsession with it, Ralph's dislike of it, and Simon's incredulity (disbelief) of the beast. The events in Chapter 6 sort of change the course of the remainder of the book and the Map (which is in the Slides Presentation) is a big part of the climax and resolution.

TDQs for Ch. 6 due tomorrow. I'll post grades from Ch. 5 TDQs today (hopefully) and try to get the rest of the grades updated. I should point out that I can't take any late work from the first six weeks, so focus on the now.

Okay, today we read chapter 6 in all classes but we didn't finish it in 2 and 7 so we'll have to play catch up tomorrow. Homework is to do QPECs for chapter 6 (5 of them) even if we didn't finish. Sorry for the late post. This was a very busy week. A few things about today: we took our planner/stamp quiz, but I realized that I didn't put in an option for "No Stamp" so anyone who didn't get a stamp would get the same credit as anyone who got a late stamp and that's completely unfair. So, long story short, we'll have to do that test again on Monday.

 

I also put in grades and did my best to update grades. Many of you got A+s. Great. You guys are awesome. Some of you guys didn't get A+s. Great. There's room for improvement. I think the people who got A+s will tell you that there's not a great deal of homework and we've never really had any difficult tests or huge assignments. It's really just a matter of work habits.

I put in as many comments as I could on the report cards and I think the grades are pretty fair over all. If you've ever tried to run a marathon and, after a mile or so, just started walking and texting and talking to people for an hour and then tried to start running again with the hope of winning the marathon, you'll know one thing: you're not going to win that marathon and you will spend the rest of the afternoon in complete misery if you even want to finish in a decent time. This is how life works. The good news is that we've still got a ways to go and most of you are in decent shape and can still win this thing and if you've read this far, I'm sure you're one of those people.

Sorry for the late post. Today we looked at some Thomas Hobbes quotes about the nature of man. All of these quote indicate that mankind is not very civilized and these ideas were a big part of Lord of the Flies. We also read chapter 5 and did our TDQs. Tomorrow we'll do our book plugs. Today we watched a short film about Alex Gray's 2010 wipeout at Todos Santos and plugged the major plot points into a narrative. You can youtube a lot of these movies at home. They all follow the same pattern. We stamped our notes and worked on NoRedInk. All you need to know is this: it's = it is.

Today we learned how to add a link to a google document and then practiced by adding links to book plugs and then to our sign up sheet for News ELA stories. We'll talk more tomorrow about exactly what we will need to do for the News ELA stories, but it's important you read, understand, and make yourself familiar with the stories. Start by annotating them carefully and adding notes. We will begin presenting next week hopefully and I'll approve them tomorrow during class.

Today was a fun Friday in the sense that we got to check out our A.R. Scores and compare how our books stack up to what we should be reading. We also read "A Boy Named Sue" by Shel Silverstein and annotated the poem in the hope of finding the various plot points (exposition, climax, etc.) It should be fairly easy to annotate; that's your only homework and most of you did it (you can do it on a phone I think).

Today we took a few notes of Point of View. You guys should know the five types (or at least have them written in your notebooks). The notes are on my website and I'll have some Quizlet terms up and shared by 4:00 p.m. today. I'll also try to update grades by today as well.

If you did badly on the NoRedInk quiz on Adverbs, you can come in and retake it at lunch (if you got less that 70 percent). If you got between 70 and 80 you have the option of retaking it and I'll keep the highest grade. Study first, though.

Today was a very busy day. We read Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" and also got the chrome books for the first time. We were supposed to bookmark and log into a bunch of sites. For example, no red ink, google classroom, quizlet, NewsEla. The reason I like to do this all at once is so we can develop a routine where students who finish work early can use the other websites and spend their time doing things that are beneficial to them and their interests. Tomorrow we'll have an actual assignment that gets graded. 

 

Be sure to bring books, planners and supplies and syllabus tomorrow.

If you hate your yearbook picture, you might want to have a better picture we can use for class and you can airdrop or email it to me.  I'm going to try to learn everyone's names very fast and I need pictures to do that.

Also, if you don't like your first name and want to be called something else, let me know ASAP.

Hello and welcome to Mr. Chrisman's class. Most of you just got your schedules and want to see if there's any information about your new teachers. If you're this type of person, we're already off to a great start. I like research and I respect people who use technology to satisfy curiosity. Feel free to send me an email to say hello and that you saw the website and if you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them.

 

About the boy in the picture. This is my son Benno and he's five years old. Since I've been teaching at MLK, I've been including at least one picture of him in every lesson. He's always around and he likes to have his picture taken, but if you have other pictures of you want me to use I'm open to suggestions.

 

About me: This is my third year at King Middle School and my second year teaching 8th Grade Language Arts at King (I taught 8th Grade U.S. History in '15-'16 and have taught 9th and 10th grade Language Arts previously). I've been teaching for 15 years in total and have lived in South Korea and Germany. I like surfing, golf, travel and reading.

 

About this class: In my opinion, this class is relatively easy if you put forth some effort. All of the handouts, assignments, and projects are digital, so you really don't have to worry about losing a piece of paper or forgetting to write something down. That being said, there are a few things that require paper, specifically your dedicated (just for this class) college ruled spiral notebook and a King Middle School Planner. You have to bring these every day. You will also need at least three pens and three pencils and at three highlighters (yellow, pink, and blue). 

 

All the homework is posted on the website by 4:00 p.m. the day before it is due (usually earlier). I answer all emails that are in my inbox before 9 p.m. 

 

Is this class hard?

 

Last year, I had a number of students get more than 100 percent in the class. I asked them how much homework they did on average. The answer: about 15 minutes. 

 

Also last year, I had a number of students get less than 50 percent in the class. I asked them how much homework they did on average. The answer: I don't do homework.

Today we finished up our CAASP testing and picked up on Lord of the Flies. We finished chapter 4 in all classes and got to the middle of chapter 5 is periods 2 and 4.

Today we read chapter 2 of Lord of the Flies and we talked about the main characters and how they are establishing a group dynamic. We also reviewed the TDQs from chapter 1 and played a little bit of cahoot. Tomorrow we were reach after 3. Make sure you have both your graphic organizer of the characters done and also do the TDQs for chapter 2 in your notebook.

Today we talked about Utopias and Dystopias. The Island is - at this point - a Utopia: no adults, ample supplies, good weather, swimming, etc.

We also read the second half of chapter one and noticed how the boys have inherited some war making characteristics. Ralph acts like a fighter plane after insulting Piggy; the trio of Ralph, Jack, and Simon dislodge a rock that they describe as being like a bomb.

Finish TDQs from Chapter 1 tonight. We’ll do character maps tomorrow and also Kahoot.

Today we started Lord of the Flies. The vocabulary is on Quizlet and the TDQs will always be on the left side of this website (you have to scroll to Lord of the Flies). There is also a copy of the text. Basically, we met the protagonist (Ralph) and his Lieutenant (Piggy) and discussed their motivations, abilities and limitations.

Today we reviewed our handout from “And Still I Rise” and read “Casey at the Bat” which is an example of a ballad. An epic is the same type of poem, but includes many more stories of the hero. An example would be “Beowulf” or “The Odyssey.”

Today we took our Poetry Terms quiz and read Maya Angelou’s “And Still I Rise.” Homework is to annotate and answer questions in notebook for stamps. We also watched a Brainpop biography and a video of her reading the poem. Check out her website for more info.

Today we read Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost. We also reviewed the earlier poems and read our ten point poems. Many people got 10 points. We will read more tomorrow. Quiz on poetry terms tomorrow.

Today we read “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks and started writing our 10 point poems. We also took a pretest for our poetry terms and also did no red ink on participles and verbs.

Today we read “Sick” by Shel Silverstein and talked about rhythm in poetry. We also watched a TED talk by Akala from the Hip Hop Shakespeare Project. Then we worked on a handout (yes, actual paper) that needs to be stamped and completed by tomorrow (you can ignore the third page)

Today we learned about Langston Hughes and his poem “Harlem.” The poem includes a lot of literary devices like assonance, rhetorical questions, irregular rhyme scheme, and imagery. We also learned a bit about the Harlem Renaissance and Langston Hughes’ career as a poet.

Today we finished our essays and learned a bit about Germany in period 4. I’ll be grading these essays basically in order of file size and it will take a while so be patient because I have some German visitors I need to show around. Tomorrow we’ll start a mini unit on Poetry. SBAC testing will start in the early part of May, then Lord of the Flies, then summer, high school, college, marriage, children, old age, death, reincarnation, then - most likely - eighth grade again.

Today we cleaned up the signup sheet for our projects and took some notes on Appositives. Sometimes you need commas, other times you don't. Notes are in slides show and need to be stamped. We also worked on our projects. If you want to get an A, try making a single frame storyboard. Also, think bulletpoints, not text. Homework is to review vocab and work on project which are due Wednesday.

Today we talked about college (see slides) and also got moving on our projects. Everyone should have a story or poem by now. We will start presenting on Friday. You should be working over the weekend and making your presentations as insightful and informative as possible.

If you want to do a Podcast, it's fairly simple. Just make a slides presentation, but instead of presenting the slides presentation, just watch the presentation and talk about what is on the slides. Use it like an organizer. But make the podcast insightful and spontaneous. Become fluent in the story/poem and talk about it in a way that's natural (I know it's a challenge, but challenges are what make us better.)

Today we went over the TDQs from Pit and the Pendulum and also got started on our group projects. Those of you who aren't in a group will have to earn your right to form a group by actually selecting and reading a story. We will start presenting on Wednesday so it's important that you Actually Read and understand the story. I expect everyone to struggle to some extent-- after all it's Poe -- but the effort will be worth it.

Today we reviewed the TDQs for "Cask of Amontillado" and began comparing articles on Poe's death. The first step is annotation. make sure you have between 30 and 40 annotations (highlighted terms, names, notes, definitions) and that you turn it in on Google classroom (!) We can work on the graphic organizer tomorrow (but if you want to work ahead you can). 

PARENTS If you have a child in my class, the odds are fairly good that your child is not turning homework in regularly. As the year begins to wind down, missing homework assignments start to add up. I have found that students who cannot get homework in regularly have a much harder time juggling late assignments. Moreover, it is important that students get homework in on a daily basis and not simply beg for leniency. Let's get our homework in every single day.

Here is a video on pi. I think this is fascinating. Watch it to the end and I'll give bonus points (there will be questions). We also took our vocab test and did our TDQs for "Amontillado." IMPORTANT: Take a make up test at lunch if you don't like your grade. Study. Then test. Many didn't study and there were some low grades.

Today I stamped the Symbols from Masque of the Red Death (but forgot in 7th 8th?) and looked at Meter (in quizlet). The meter is the patter of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry. We saw a brainpop on it. We also read Annabell Lee and noticed the meter of the last few stanza. We also looked at Sonnet 130 and saw the meter and rhyme scheme of Shakespearean Sonnets. It's also a funny sonnet . 

We also did NoRedInk for plural possessives which should be a review for most of us. Homework is the Annabell Lee TDQs as well as NoRedInk if you didn't finish in class.

Today we finished To Kill a Mockingbird and watched the Sparknotes video on it. Then we did TDQs and any last minute items that are due no later than tomorrow. I will do my best to get everything up to date tomorrow gradebook wise. Today we finished Chapter 29 and 30 in TKAM in most classes we reviewed the TDQs for Chapters 27-30. We also did our peer reviews which are due tomorrow (I know they were technically due today so don't worry if it says Late on google classroom.) We also looked at the Storyboardthat assignments. Today we finished chapter 18 and I peeked in on some of the annotations from the digital handout on Google Classroom. We also did the TDQs and looked at the Storyboards. Computers are sort of scarce this upcoming week so we'll have to do a lot of reading in class, but that's to be expected.

I've been grading your book plugs and many of you have bad links, short subjective/objective reviews or nothing at all. This is harmful to your grade, so please have those done ASAP.

Today we read chapter 17 in TKAM and noticed the way Harper Lee describes Mr. Ewell like a rooster. It's very consistent and maintains the motif of birds. We did our TDQs online and also looked at a few paragraphs which we annotated (we will finish this on Monday) but it's not homework.

Today we read chapter 16 and learned about the people that come to town for the trial and how the architecture of the courthouse sort of matches the attitudes of the South. This is Harper Lee's way of making a comment on society without saying it directly. We will annotate the paragraph from the slides show tomorrow. Work on storyboards and TDQs for Ch. 16 for homework.

Today we read Chapter 14 and most of 15 and did our TDQs. We also watched a short video about Emmett Till. Feel free to research this story on your own. The key reason for watching this is that this story - as tragic as it was - probably made an impact on Harper Lee (remember the TKaM was published in 1960 and this took place in 1954). This event also woke people up to the horrific race relations in the deep south. I know it's a grim video, but that grimness woke America up to a problem eventually resulted in the Civil Rights Movement. 

For homework, finish the TDQs and the Subjective Analysis (on google documents). Make sure you do it. Lots of people are having problems getting homework finished. It's a very small amount of work.

Today we reflected on the narrative structure of The Outsiders and TKaM. At this point, most people are wondering where this book is going; why did Harper Lee abandon the story about Boo and move into Tom Robinson. It seems weird, but there is a reason for this that is explained later and it's worth staying with it if for no other reason than the vocabulary. 

We also read Chapter 12 and learned why the trial will be so difficult for everyone. Your homework is in the linked powerpoint and I will stamp it on Monday. If you were out, get it done, if not, it's late.

If you were out for a field trip, come by at lunch and you'll take a different test. It's short and easy and (as I've said in class) St8 out of Quizlet.

Today we finished part one (almost) in all the classes and had a Vocabulary Quiz on Vocabulary words 35-68 in Quizlet. If you missed it, you can take it at lunch but it will be a different quiz. I'll put the grades up ASAP but it probably won't be until tomorrow. Speaking of tomorrow, we will have a short character quiz so study the maps. We'll also have a few easy questions on the plot, so if you're paying attention, you'll probably be okay. For example, Who does Scout fight at Finch's landing? What do they get for Xmas? What month do they shoot Tim Johnson. That type of stuff. Focus on characters.

Today we worked on our TDQs from Chapter 8 and 9, updated our character maps and brainstormed what the title To Kill a Mockingbird was about. Then we found out. Chapter 10 is very important in establishing Atticus as a powerful character and conveys the overall theme of the novel.  Vocab Quiz tomorrow!

Today we did our TDQs from chapter 7 and finished our Avatar projects. If you didn't finish yours, I put a zero in the gradebook but I will give you up to 70 points for having it turned in late. You can add it to the slide show on Monday or over the weekend. These were due today and I tried to make that as clear as possible yesterday. We got about halfway through chapter 8 in TKaM and will finish first thing Monday. Have a great weekend and study new vocab words on Quizlet.

Make sure you guys do the homework which is to find 10 concrete details about your character. Today we finished Chapter 4 and worked on the TDQs (which are linked to the left). I'll stamp those tomorrow. We also had our vocabulary test. We'll also read Chapter 5. We also did a Kahoot on some of the basic information. If you're getting any questions wrong, you should be reviewing the book or at the very least the Sparknotes. I also updated quizlet vocabulary and characters.

Today we will review the vocabulary terms from Chapters 1-3, update our character maps, and try using chrome books to collaborate on our TDQs. Afterwards, we will finish chapter 4 and try to figure our what's happening in the Finch's neighborhood.

Because of the Pep Rally, I decided to postpone the Vocabulary Quiz until Tuesday. Just chapter 3 words from Quizlet (the first 30 words) but the quiz will only have 8 words (I'm not telling which one.)
