New Calendar for 2013-14
Beginning with the 2013-14 school year, the first day of class for all OUSD students will be Tuesday, August 20, 2013. The slightly earlier start date is a result of a new district-wide calendar unanimously approved by the OUSD Board of Education. The change was made during the board’s regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, March 13, 2012.
Other minor changes regarding the revised calendar beginning in 2013-14 include a shorter Thanksgiving Week holiday and an end to the first semester at the winter break (December 20, 2013). The last day of instruction for students will be June 4, 2014.
The district asks that all OUSD families please take note of these changes in order to plan accordingly for the start of school in August 2013. For questions regarding the calendar change, please call 760-966-4008.

PROMOTION AND BEACH BASH INFORMATION
Dear Parents and Eighth Grade Students,
Believe it or not, it’s time to start planning the end of the year activities for our eighth grade students. As we begin our second semester of the 2012-2013 school year, we should all be reminded how exciting this time of year is for all our students, but especially our eighth graders. Eighth grade students will be excited about the beach bash and promotion, as well as moving to the high school.
Traditionally at this time a year, we find that many of our students start to lose interest in schoolwork and increase their interest in socialization. However, it is King's expectation that all students continue to follow the district, school, and classroom policies that were set forth at the beginning of this school year and reinforced throughout. In order to ensure that all students are prepared for promotion and the beach bash, we decided to start early and remind often!
The end of the year activities have a criteria that must be met. Students who do not meet the criteria will not be allowed to attend. Letters have been mailed home to the families of all 8th grade students. For a copy of the letter in English and Spanish, click HERE. This letter outlines the new criteria that has been established for this year's promotion and Beach Bash, including a new GPA requirement and dress code. It is important that EVERYONE understand what our expectations are. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact an administrator or counselor.

GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE AWARD CEREMONY
Hannah Survilas (7th grade) and Bella Teta (6th grade)were the recipients of the "Great Kindness Challenge" Award for King Middle School. King Middle School and our two students were awarded a certificate in recognition of our commitment to creating a culture of kindness on our campus and in our community. Both girls are members of the Girl Scouts, volunteer their time tutoring elementary students in school and/or in the community, and are always willing to lend a helping hand to others to spread their positive attitude. It is contagious on our campus! San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, pictured with the girls, has also made a commitment to supporting all anti-bullying campaigns in our county.

This is a casual meeting, which provides a forum for open dialogue about current events on campus. Please join us. Bring your questions and suggestions. Below is a list of tentative dates. Meetings will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
